The leader of Muslims in Uganda, Supreme Mufti Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje has been named in a fresh land grabbing scandal in the eastern district of Mbale, a court says.
In the case before Mbale Magistrates Court, the Mufti is accused in a dossier of repossessing 11 acres of prime land located at Mile Four on Mbale-Tororo highway slightly a month after he and his co-defendants were evicted from.
Mufti Mubajje claims the land belongs to him and he bought it from a one Assad Katemba in 1982 though court presided over by Ms. Liliann Bucyana in November 2012 ruled that the property belonged to Petronilla Kakayi and Geresom Khaemba, the plaintiffs.
Being a powerful person, Mubajje on July 19, 2015 went against a restraining order even after the High Court in Mbale dismissed his parallel appeal and took over the land accompanied by his guards.
Mr. Micheal Kitutu, a lawyer for the plaintiffs on February 23, 2016, lodged two cases of criminal trespass against the mufti with officers at Mbale Central Police Station under police references MBLLD83/02/2016 and MBL CRB 491/2016.
However the OC CID Mbale, ASP Onesmus Mwesigwa has kept frustrating the plaintiffs to prosecute the Mufti because his is a Very Important Person (VIP), Kitutu claims.
Inspector General of Police Kale Kayihura’s attention has been brought to the matter and a case has already been lodged to the Professional Standards Unit (PSU) against some Mbale cops.
