Positive results have been register less than a day after the Inspector General of Police Gen Kale Kayihura apologized to Muslims over the recent police raids at Nakasero and Kiwatule mosques.
At least 14 of the 18 people who were arrested following police raids last month, have been released without charge. Those who were released include: Ayub Nyende, Abdul Mu’umin, Umar Kamoga, Ismail Kasibante, Musa Semanda, Juma Kavuma and Hamis Kabwama.
Others are: Ashraf Mawanda, Muhammad Senyonga, Muzamiru Ssekamatte, Abdu Abdallah Isabirye, Hassan Twaha, Shafiq Sebandeke, Abdallah Lubega.
Four other Muslims Sheikh Yahaya Mwanje, former Amir Umah (leader) of Tabliq Muslims, Sheikh Muhammad Buyondo, Abdul Wahaab and Musa Sekandi are still detained and are yet to be likely charged with terrorism and murder related offences.
Last week, Gen Kayihura said the search at Nakasero mosque was as a result of intelligence information from a suspect in the murder of Maj Muhammad Kiggundu.
Maj Kiggundu was killed with his bodyguard Sgt Stephen Mukasa on November 26 in Masanafu trading centre in Makindye Division, Kampala.
Last month, the police raided two mosques including Nakasero Mosque and Kiwatule Mosque in what they called a tip off to search for evidence related to the murder of Maj. Kiggundu who was shot dead in November.
