Buluma village in Butayunja sub-county in Mityana district has been sent into turmoil after three police officers attached to the Police Flying Squad have shot dead a 3-year-old girl and injured two other people.
Eyewitnness reports say that the officers raided the village on the invitation of a resident only identified as Kulumba after he was accused by locals for possessing witchcraft.
URN said that when the officers arrived on the village, they reportedly attempted to make arrests, but residents put up resistance prompting the officers to open fire. In the process, the officers shot dead 3-year-old Viola and injured her mother Dina Nabakooza and another resident identified as Ivan Kato. The officers fled the scene shortly after shooting their victims.
The Wamala Region Police Commander, Fred Kidima rushed to the area and apologized to the residents. He explained that the officers will be apprehended and arraigned in court for murder and attempted murder.
Police says they regret the incident and it was not a sanctioned operation but disclose the identities of the irate officers.
Joseph Luzige, the Mityana LC V chairperson appealed to the residents to stay calm.
