There is heavy deployment, military police seen protecting areas surrounding Uganda’s Parliament as ruling party members of parliament seeking to abolish the upper age limit continue their push to amend the constitution with minimal resistence.
On Monday, September 18, officers from the Brig Sabiiti Muzeyi’s military police have taken over the security at parliament. Several traffic officers have also deployed along parliamentary avenue to control traffic flow.
Plain clothed security officers have deployed inside parliament to restrict entry.
Several sources said Police and other security agencies have put key Ugandan opposition leaders under surveillance for reportedly planning massive demonstrations against the proposed bill.
Opposition leaders and NGOs were believed to be clandestinely mobilizing masses to rise and challenge the bill by holding demonstrations starting today.
The protests are expected to take place in urban areas and opposition strongholds like unemployed youth in Kalerwe with the view of marching to State House Nakasero and Parliament.
The key leaders being monitored by police are Dr Kizza Besigye, MP Mubarak Munyagwa, Mohammed Nsereko, Ingrid Turinawe, Allan Ssewanyana and Kampala Mayor Erias Lukwago.
Earlier in the morning, a couple of Jobless Brotherhood pro-age limit ‘cops’ were arrested over distributing fliers calling on citizens to ‘to protect the Constitution before it’s weak to defend you’.
