The French coach was let go as the manager of the national team following Congo’s dismal start to the World Cup qualifiers.
Congo’s 1-0 loss at Uganda on Saturday followed a home defeat to Egypt in October and left the country bottom of Group E without any points. Congo also failed to qualify for January’s African Nations Cup finals in Gabon.
They sat at the bottom of Group E in the qualifiers after losing to coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredejovic’s Cranes’ outfit.
Jean-Michel M’Bono the President of Fédération Congolaise de Football since 2010 was very annoyed with the performance and told media that a poor-footballing nation like Uganda could not have over dominated the Congolese like that on any given day if the coach had not failed to raise the status bar expected of the team.
Congo’s chances for a slot in the World Cup qualifiers are dimmed as they are due to meet Ghana in Accra in the third round of the qualifiers before facing Ghana again a week later in Brazzaville. Uganda managed to hold African giants to a goalless draw away in the first Group E game which was played early last month, this makes it harder for Congo to pick a similar or better result from hungry Ghana.
Lechantre, 66years-old was appointed in January following the departure of Claude Leroy. Congo have only won one win in seven games since Lechantre took over as manager.
Lechantre, failed to secure Congo a place in the 2017 African Cup of Nations after they finished second in Group E behind Guinea Bissau.
