Four time presidential candidate, Dr Kizza Besigye’s supporters shared photos of an ostensible ‘presidential handshake’ offered to Uganda Cranes boss Micho Sredejovic on Saturday.
Besigye and Micho both witnessed Uganda Premier League side Onduparaka FC impress against 15-time Kenyan league champions Gor Mahia at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole in a high international profile friendly game.
They met in the VIP lounge of the national stadium after the final whistle had been blown and had a chitchat.
The popular duo was joined by other celebs, football officials from Kenya and local politicians like Leader of Opposition in Parliament Hon. Winnie Kiiza and DP political heavy wait Mukasa Mbidde’s family that was sauntering around the lounge.
A Facebook user Morris P’Loreng’a captioned the pics: ‘.. Kiiza Besigye is executing the accountable handshake in appreciation of the Uganda Cranes’ appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations. To Kizza Besigye, it is a shoe-in the direction for soccer in Uganda.”
Micho led Uganda to Africa’s biggest sporting extravaganza in gabon after nearly a 40-year absence and the Cranes were eliminated at the group stage.
The “president handshake” has been the most popular news item in Uganda this year. For a long time now, there has been no cross-party anger in Uganda, like there was over President Yoweri Museveni’s Shs6 billion “golden handshake” cash reward to 42 government officials for the settlement of an oil tax dispute in a London court.
Each of the 42 officials pocketed, on average, Shs200 million each.
It’s still unclear whether Dr. Besigye promised coach Micho some money but what’s even more interesting is that he gave the extraordinary Onduparaka team a Shs2 million ‘handshake’.
