Normalcy is yet to return to one of the oldest schools in Western Uganda, Nkokonjeru Primary School after eight of its senior teachers went on temporary strike due to delayed wages.
On Monday, the aggrieved teachers caused a stir in Mbarara town when they marched to the Resident District Commissioner’s office to seek answers.
According to regional news agency MbararaNews, the school was closed for more than 8hours on over delayed payment of their salary arrears for the month of September.
Their leader Dan Kakooza said for the last three months, government has not yet paid their salary arrears which is affecting their economic stability of their families.
Teacher Kakooza said some of them their children have been chased away from schools yet they have loans that must be paid back.
Mbarara RDC Vincent Kamugisha asked teachers to understand the dynamics of government in the new payment system IFMS since most of Mbarara Municipality workers are yet to receive their payments as well.
The RDC blamed government for not listening to civil servants over delayed salaries yet they keep attacking office if the RDC over the same issue.
This comes less than a week after teachers in the country joined their counterparts around the world to mark World Teachers’ Day and the main celebrations of the day were at Lugogo Cricket Oval under the theme “Valuing teachers, improving their status”.
