Manafwa district authorities want government to resettle mudslide victims as a permanent solution to the problem. Mudslides have displaced hundreds of people from Kaato, Bunabutsale and Weswa Sub counties in the past few months.
The affected people have pitched camp at Bunabutsale sub county headquarters where they are living under squalid conditions. Government delivered food relief to the affected families through the Office of the Prime Minister.
The Manafwa District LC V Chairperson, John Musila has thanked government for the food relief but called for a permanent solution to the problem.
He wants government to relocate the affected persons to Bulambuli district as earlier promised, saying the displaced families have accepted to move.
The worst mudslides occurred in Nametsi in Budada district in June 2013 burying several people and displacing hundreds of others.
Back then government set aside Shillings 8 billion to purchase land in Bulambuli district to host the landslide survivors. However, the process was never completed because of the disputes over the land earmarked to host the residents.
