Hard times have continued to hit the top leadership of East Africa’s oldest and biggest university, Makerere.
The latest news reaching us reveals that the Kampala High Court’s Execution division has issued an order was to enable the bailiffs auction Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof Ddumba Ssentamu’s car is set to be auctioned together with three others to recover Shs. 56million in unpaid legal fees to a city advocate Steven Ssenkeezi Ssali.
The debt goes way back to the representation of Hajjati Fatuma Nakatude and a one Uzobia Baine who were University employees challenging the procedure through which individuals occupying the top administrative posts within the University are appointed.
Makerere University agreed to settle the matter out of the High Court and to meet legal costs incurred by the two plaintiffs; something the University has failed to fulfill despite repeated demands from the lawyer.
As of Wednesday, the ballifs managed to attach motor vehicle no. UAJ -667X belonging to David Kahondha Muhwezi the University Secretary after being intercepted at Planning House within Kampala. The hunt for the rest is on.
Meanwhile, TheUgandan understands that, Prof. Ddumba Ssentamu has not yet filed a report to the minister of education Mrs. Janet Museveni on university staff who defiantly failed to return university vehicles.
Makerere staff were directed to return vehicles but only five complied. There is no operation at the institution following President Yoweri Museveni’s directive to close the university. 370 vehicles are yet to be returned.
The university has 375 vehicles both for staff and project coordinators.
