Students of Makerere University will be allowed to complete their first semester after management agreed on Wednesday that Uganda’s oldest institution will most likely reopen on January 2, 2017.
The first semester which started in late August was cut short on November 1 when the president directed for the closure of the university following a long standoff caused by a sit-down strike by lecturers over incentive arrears amounting to Shs28bn.
Mr Barnabas Nawangwe, the Deputy Vice Chancellor Finance and Administration said that management awaits the final decision from the council, the top governing body, so that the university can resume operations on the agreed date.
“Students are likely to report on 2nd January. On Tuesday we’re meeting the president to give him our guidance,” Tayebwa said.
