Lord Councillor Segirinya Muhammad and Controversial Kawempe Mayor Mubarak Munyagwa arrested as police tries to stop a section of FDC supporters from accessing Makerere University where they intend to hold a fundraising event for lecturers’ allowances in the hope of having the University opened.
The duo are now detained at Wandegeya police station.
Meanwhile FDC’s former presidential aspirant Dr. Col. Kiiza Besigye has also been blocked by police on his way to Makerere. Police however, blocked the politician from leaving his residence saying he obtained no permission for the meeting.
Dr Besigye had given the government a 10-day ultimatum to re-open the university or he mobilises the public to storm the university.
Besigye, however, noted that they dropped the violent means as they had planned earlier because they do not want more bloodshed and opted to solicit for money from the public.
They are targeting 600,000 former students and well-wishers to raise Shs30 billion which they will use to clear the outstanding arrears which have paralysed the university for a month.
Makerere University was closed by President Museveni early in November citing security reasons.
Despite criticism by the public including politicians and the civil society, government maintains that the university will remain locked until lecturers resolve to go back to work.
Prior to the shutdown, lecturers under the Makerere University Academic Staff Association, unanimously resolved to stage an industrial action demanding government to clear their arrears, standing at more than Shs28 billion.
The sit down strike attracted students’ riots which forced the President to intervene.
