Tension is rising in Makerere University following threats by lecturers in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences- CHUSS to withdraw their services from the evening program over none payment of their extra load allowances.
The lecturers are expected to hold an emergency meeting on Wednesday January 31st, 2018 to decide their next course of action.
The move stems from the failure by the university to pay lecturers on the evening program extra load allowances. Some of the lecturers have already withdrawn their services from the evening program. The latest to withdraw their services from the program are lecturers from the Department of Journalism and Communication under the School of Journalism and communication.
The lecturers unanimously resolved in their meeting on January 25, 2018 held in room 44 in the Faculty of Arts building to withdraw their services from the evening program citing failure by the university to pay their allowances. Lecturers from the School of law were the first to withdraw their services from the evening program.
Dr. William Tayeebwa, the Head, Department of Journalism and Communication, says the staff were left without any option but to withdraw their services following the failure by the university to honor its promise to remunerate staff on the evening program.
On average, an evening class in the department carries close to 80 students meaning that close to 300 students are to be affected by the development. Dr. Tayeebwa appeals to students on the evening program to join the day program.
Earlier today, the head of Department of European and Oriental Languages (DEOL), Dr Edith Natukunda-Togboa in communication to the dean School of Languages, Literature and Communication (SLLC) noted that during a Departmental Consultation meeting held on January 29th 2018, lecturers resolved to abstain from conducting evening lessons over similar claims.
