Makerere university lecturers under the umbrella body, Makerere university academic staff association (MUASA) have today met in a general assembly and decided to maintain their strike after government failed to honour commitments to pay them Shs32 billion in incentive arrears.
They want the University Council to give them a clear proposal on when their arrears will be paid. Some stormed out of the General assembly in protest.

The lecturers also turned down new payment terms which include payment of November salary and incentives.
After a series of deliberations involving bickering of staffs, the assembly turned rowdy and lecturers who had filled the Makerere University Main Hall stormed out of the meeting. This made their Chairperson Dr. Muhammed Kigundu to spend about 20 minutes appealing for the Staffs to come back and make a resolution.
Prof. Jean John Barya from the Makerere School of law who is the Muasa Legal Advisor gave an interpretation of the Council Letter to Muasa about the Tuesday December 13 Council – Muasa consultative meeting as not substantial.
Convinced about his interpretation and legal guidance, the Muasa general assembly agreed that their executive goes back to council for proper negotiations.
When the lecturers strike almost two months ago, the students also went on strike, protesting against not being taught, a situation that prompted President Yoweri to order the closure.
