Makerere University clinched the second semifinal berth of this season’s Nile Special University Football League following a goalless draw with rivals Kyambogo in a game played in Luzira on Friday evening.
Needing to win by a three goal margin without conceding after a 2-0 “home” loss three weeks ago, Kyambogo found the task too difficult in the return leg that was played without fans.
This followed more crowd trouble between the two teams in the first leg that had forced organisers to move the game to a neutral Prisons Ground in Luzira.
Both teams missed goal scoring opportunities as Makerere managed to see out the game in which Julius Mugema a four goal hero as Makerere progressed past KIU at this stage last season, was voted man of the match.
The Deo Bamweyana coached Makerere now join last year’s finalists Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) who progressed 3-3 on away goals after Thursday’s 2-2 return leg result with Uganda Christian University (UCU).
On next Wednesday, former winners Kampala University who hold a 2-1 first away leg lead over Busitema host their opponents at Villa Park with Nkumba University and Gulu University clashing the following day. The latter’s tie is evenly poised following a goalless draw in the first leg in Gulu.
