‘Makerere is not a funeral’, angry lecturers tell off ‘opportunistic’ Besigye

Disgruntled Makerere University lecturers have lashed at four time presidential aspirant Dr Kizza Besigye to keep away because he is seeking political capital.

Makerere University Academic Staff Assoiciation (MUASA) chairman, Dr. Muhammed Kiggundu claimed that was just ‘politically’ taking advantage of their woes under the guise of fundraising for their salary arrears amounting Shs28 billion.

Dr. Kiggundu says since the closure of the university by President Museveni in November, many political powers have trivialized their cause and portrayed the lecturers negatively before the public.

He said, “This is to categorically state that we in MUASA disassociate ourselves from any politically activity professed under the support of our cause. But don’t assume we mean only Besigye or FDC alone, but all political parties be it NRM.”

“Otherwise this not a lumbe (funeral)where they get baskets and collect money to help orphans, that we can not allow.”

Besigye on Friday was stopped by Uganda Police from forcing himself into Makerere University  for the ill-fated fundraiser while many of his irate followers including political leaders were briefly detained at Wandegeya Police station.

The opposition kingpin’s 10-day ultimatum to President Museveni over re-opening the 94-year-old institution was overtaken by events.
