Guild presidents of different universities are planning to strike over the closure of Makerere University, say opening Makerere University is a top priority as government discusses a comprehensive plan to solve lecturer’s arrears.

Alongside vocal students body ganda National Students’ Association (Unsa), the student leaders cited a number of challenges that affect students which government has accorded a deaf ear.

The guild presidents meeting in Wandegeya unanimously agreed that the president should listen to them without fail.

“The government’s move to request the medical students only to resume work is pathetic and we will support them in their solidarity not to resume work,” Gulu University representative Robert Bukembo said.

Students joined the strike after lecturers under their umbrella body Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA) resolved to continue their strike until sh32b in allowance arrears over eight months is paid.

Meanwhile, Police have arrested more Makerere University students protesting against the indefinite closure of the university by President Museveni.

They were detained at the nearby Wandegeya Police Station from where they would later be transferred to the Central Police Station.
