An independent candidate in the Kyadondo East by-election Muwada Nkunyingi has been hospitalized at Univik, Kamwokya after sustaining injuries during his arrest.

The Kampala Metropolitan Police Commander says Nkunyingi was picked up when he tried to stir trouble at Kitezi Disabled Primary school polling station.

According to Mwesigwa, Mr Nkunyingi attempted to rough up the presiding officer after failing to trace his name on the voter’s register.

Police officers and polling officials informed Mr Nkunyingi, a lawyer, that he was supposed to vote from another booth and not the one that he wanted to vote in but he refused. Afande Mwesigwa explains that the candidate was briefly held at Kasangati police station but gives no details about the physical harm the candidate suffered.

But footage on NBS television that was broadcasting live the fracas at Kiteezi showed candidate Nkunyingi Muwada being manhandled by the authorities.  A policewoman grabbed his collar and they captured on camera tussling before male officers joined the fight. Nkunyinji was fighting them as he repeatedly screamed that he has to vote before sitting on the dusty ground as more fracas went on. Minutes later, he was been thrown onto the back of a police truck with other a group of voter’s believed to be supporters of independent candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine.

Police claim they were compelled to arrest and detain Independent candidate Nkunyingi Muwada after he made several attempts to attack police officers and polling officials who informed him that he was supposed to vote from another booth and not the one that he wanted to vote in.
