KTN journalist Joy Doreen Biira charged with terrorism

Kenyan based news anchor and reporter Joy Doreen Biira and four others have been charged with ‘abetting terrorism’ according to police bond as tweeted by her lawyer Nicholas Opiyo.

Joy had a long chat after 6pm with Leader of Opposition in Parliament Winnie Kiiza shortly after her release from Kasese Police Station on police bond.

Released alongside Joy Biira was and her husband, Newton Kungu, his brother and her relatives Musete and Wakemba all charged on Sunday 27 under case file SD Ref 61/27/11/016 and thereby binded to appear at Kasese Police station at 9.00am on 8th December 2016.

As part of their bond obligations, Police said the suspects shall continue to attend further toanswer to the said charge until otherwise directed by the court.

Joy and her co accused were Sunday taken into police custody allegedly over a post she made on social media over fighting between Ugandan security forces and armed militia.

She had been in Uganda to attend her traditional wedding ceremony was taken in together with her fiancé shortly after the event.

The King of Rwenzururu was also detained during the police swoop following clashes between the police and militia.  The King, Charles Wesley Mumbere is accused of inciting violence after militiamen reportedly attacked a police post in his hometown of Kasese.

Security forces stormed his palace amid claims he was harbouring fighters. He has however denied any involvement.  About 55 people were killed during the Sunday clashes.
