Kirinya-Jinja SSS captain George Kasonko has attributed his side’s ‘deserved’ one-all draw against defending champions KCCA on Tuesday at Bugembe stadium to the ‘tactical discipline’ exhibited by the home side.
Known for their resilient play especially in front of their home fans, the league debutants went into the game unbeaten at home this season, and unsurprisingly, managed to keep their Tuesday opponents- statistically best attacking side in the league- at bay.
“It was not an easy game.” Kasonko nicknamed ‘Redondo’ for his playing style that is likened to former Real Madrid and AC Milan midfielder Fernando Redondo said.
“They enjoyed much possession in the first half but our tactical discipline enabled us to hold them. We came back in the second half and created three good chances that could have won us the game but failed to convert them. But all in all a point against KCCA is something big,” he added.
Joseph Ochaya had put the league leaders in the driving seat with his 20th minute goal, but that was short-lived as former Bul striker John Wakalaita converted a penalty three minutes later.
The side coached by Alex Isabirye then went on to match the table toppers for most of the game and the game ended in a stalemate.
“I think they got tired and frustrated. They didn’t expect to lose points” continued Kasonko who also said “KCCA disrespected us because they thought we are a weak team.”
While winless Kirinya-Jinja SSS have flattered with relegation since season start, the midfielder believes the two consecutive draws against Express and KCCA have helped boost the confidence in the squad, and is optimistic a win is just around the corner.
With Vipers, one of the favorites to lift this season’s trophy the side’s next opponent, the captain knows it’s a tall order asking for a win from the newcomers, but he is hopeful they can upset Abdallah Mubiru’s boys in their next league engagement.
“The two results have lifted the confidence in the team. We are now looking at our next game which is Vipers. It’s going to be a very tough game but hopefully we can register our first win. Football is very unpredictable so you never know.”
With seven draws and two losses thus far, Kirinya-Jinja SSS sit 13th in the league with seven points.
