Serbian giants Red Star Belgrade will complete the signing of former Gor Mahia Jinja-bred Uganda international Khalid Aucho on a six month renewable contract after a prolonged negotiation period, according to our colleagues at KICKOFF South Africa.
Aucho player had also attracted interest from Serbia, Sweden and Zambia.
The 23-year-old had been a free agent since leaving South African club Baroka FC alongside Cranes skipper Geoffrey Massa – upon the Cranes’ return from the African Nations Cup finals in Gabon this year.
The duo barely featured for Baroka, making a combined seven league appearances following their arrival in the off-season.
“Aucho has signed for Red Star Belgrade and is currently waiting for the issuing of his visa before he joins the team,” his representative Ivica Stankovic was quoted by the South Africans.
They confirmed his agent picked up that Aucho’s ITC was issued by SAFA and that a deal has since been done with Red Star, who are currently top of the Serbian Super Liga.
Uganda Cranes head coach Milutin Sredojevic who hails from Serbia was elated with the news of the midfielder joining one of his boyhood clubs.
He tweeted; “Coming to coach in Africa I had a dream to have a player for my childhood team RED STAR BELGRADE. My dream became reality trough AUCHO KHALID.”
Red Star are the most successful club from Serbia and the only team from Eastern Europe to win the UEFA Champions League, which they lifted while it was still known as the European Cup in 1991.
