Voter turnout is worryingly low as Kenyans today go the polls in a Presidential election re-run shrouded by uncertainty.
Last month, the Kenyan Supreme Court annulled the results of the 8th August Presidential elections citing irregularities, paving way for today’s election.
However preparations for the Election Re-run have been dogged by endless controversy, including the withdrawal of the main opposition candidate Raila Odinga.
And just a week ago a top Kenya Electoral Commission official resigned and fled to the US citing death threats, further lending credibility to concern about the capacity of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission IEBC to hold a free and fair election.
Hours later, Wafula Chebukati, the IEBC chairman, expressed doubt that his commission can deliver a free and fair presidential election.
He pointed to political leaders as the greatest threat to a credible vote. And just yesterday, a Kenyan High Court judge ruled that 200 returning
officers that would oversee the elections were recruited illegally.
Chebukati now says all is well for the polls.
