More than 80 people have been admitted to Bwera Hospital in Kasese district following an outbreak of Cholera.

The outbreak of the disease caused by exposure to faecally contaminated water or food, follows a series of floods that washed away latrines into water sources in sub-counties of Nyakiyumbu, Bwera and Isango. The most affected villages include Bunyiswa, Rwehingo, Katholhu, Rusese and Kyanzi.

Kasese district health Officer Yusuf Baseka confirms the outbreak and says that no deaths have so far been recorded.  He says the most affected people are from Bukonzo West constituency, an area neighbours the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Meanwhile, the district health team and some non-governmental organizations have reached the area to rescue the situation warning people to first hold the selling of cooked foods along the markets and roads across the constituency.

Cholera is characterized by a sudden onset of acute watery diarrhea that can lead to death by severe dehydration.
