Investigations into the killing of a child rights activist, Kenneth Akena, in Kampala late last year by the Kanyamunyu brothers are complete, the state says.

Following their failed plea to be released on bail, the accused, Matthew Kanyamunyu, his girlfriend Cynthia Munwangari and his elder brother Joseph Kanyamunyu, today left Luzira prison where they have been since late last year.

Grade one Magistrate Noah Ssajjabi committed them Tuesday on the request of prosecution’s Doreen Elima who told court investigations into their case are now  complete She confirmed she had instructions from the DPP to send them to the trial court.

The prosecution alleges that the three suspects on November 12 last year while on Kampala-Jinja road near Malik Car Bond, opposite Uganda Manufacturers Association show ground in Nakawa Division with malice aforethought, caused the death of Akena.

The case has however taken on tribal dimensions after both Edith and Winnie Byanyima appeared in court to stand surety for the suspects who had applied for bail. Politicians from Northern Uganda, including Aruu South MP Odonga Otto and his Kitgum Municipality counterpart, Beatrice Anywar, accused the Byanyimas of betraying Acholi people. Otto argued that it was betrayal for Byanyima, wife to former presidential candidate, Dr Kizza Besigye, to want to bail out Kanyamunyu yet FDC party and Besigye enjoy huge political support in Acholi.
