2018 Chan, 3rd round
Aug 18: Rwanda Vs. Uganda
For a talented footballer to be kept out of action for two years, and the national team just under three, Savio Kabugo thanks God and his coach for a rather successful 2016/17 Uganda Premier League (UPL) season with Proline.
He hopes good luck continues as he leaves Kampala this week to have trials at South African topflight league club Bloemfontein Celtic where his friend Benjamin Ochan played in 2009. Kabugo’s agent has been in contact with Celtics chairman Max Tshabalala who sanctioned the trials – his second stint in the country.
TheUgandan understands Celtic have welcomed Kabugo to their training, with a view to adding him to their squad for the 2017/18 season. Celtic’s new coach, Veselin Jelusic, will be keen to add some new players to the team in preparation for the upcoming season.
This means the Proline defender’s place on the Uganda national team has been allocated to KCCA’s Timothy Awany ahead of Saturday’s Chan final qualification round return leg against Rwanda.
Kabugo who has good game reading skills and enjoys passing the ball out of defense alongside Paul Musamali marshaled the Cranes backline with ease as interim coach Moses Basena’s side kept a clean sheet in the 3-0 first leg win at St. Mary’s Stadium in Kitende.
Basena’s team had a morning training session at the Star Times Stadium, Lugogo on Tuesday. Twenty one players were present for the morning session.
Awanyi who missed the first round of the qualifier said that he is prepared and set to join the rest to accomplish the mission.
“I’m ready to join the rest in our bid to return to CHAN though I missed the first leg of the qualifier. I have only need to work hard that the coach considers me in the final squad” Awanyi stated.
