India, Turkish stars coming for Uganda Badminton Open

Lugogo Arena in Kampala will be a beehive of activities from February 22-25th as players from all over the world converge registered to take part in the 2018 Uganda International Badminton Championship.

Authorities have confirmed that foreign players from 15 nations including India and Turkey have registered to take part in this year’s event sanctioned by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).

Simon Mugabi, the Chief Executive Officer of the Uganda Badminton Association (UBA) said on Tuesday that he is glad the Championship will have high foreign players from 15 nations taking part.

He said the Indian players Harshit Aggarwal and Chaliha Orijit will play in the men’s singles, while Kona Tarun and Sharma Saurabh tussle it out in the doubles. Harshit is also ranked 216th in the world.

Mauritian George Julien Paul will also take part as he tries to defend the men’s singles title he won last year. Last year Julien Paul benefited in the final when Uganda’s top player Edwin Ekiring who plies his trade in the Netherlands got injured in the second game and could not continue. Ekiring has also entered the event as he will be out to try an win his first Uganda International Open Championship title.

Uganda’s Bridget Shamim Bangi who won the title last year win face stiff challenge from Africa’s top ranked player Kate Foo Kune (pictured above of Mauritius) and Egypt’s Hosny Hadia among others.

The event will attract players from Uganda, Kenya, Burundi, Algeria, Jordan, India, Kyrgyzstan, Syria, Germany, France, Turkey, Greece, Zambia and the Republic Republic of Maldives among others.
