Just two days after disbanding the Flying Squad Unit, the Policy and Advisory Committee (PAC) of Police has resolved to form a similar unit.

PAC, which is chaired by the Inspector General of Police, is top policy making organ of the Uganda Police Force. It is comprised of all Police Directors, the Deputy Inspector General of Police and the undersecretary.

PAC convened on Wednesday May 9th, 2018, and resolved that the Director of Criminal Investigations, Grace Akullo sets up a unit similar to the disbanded Flying Squad Unit to handle violent crime like armed robberies, murders, kidnaps and motor vehicle thefts.

All personnel from the disbanded Flying Squad Unit are expected to report to the CID Headquarters Kibuli next week for redeployment.

Patrick Onyango, the Deputy  Police Spokesperson told journalists that he hadn’t received any information about the PAC resolution.

On Tuesday, the Inspector General of Police, Martin Okoth Ochola disbanded the Flying Squad Unit, which was in charge of handling gun related crime and high profile cases like kidnap and car theft.

He created a new department under the Special Investigations Division known as organised crime under Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Mark Odong.

It’s still unclear whether this department will be the new elite Squad.
