The Inspector General of Police, Gen Kale Kayihura, has ordered for the suspension of AIP Agnes Ikwenya, Sgt. Margaret Andiru and Cpl. Grace Atono, who have been working on the Child and Family Protection desk.
The punishing of the trio follows the Police chief’s abrupt visit to Nansana on Friday without any prior announcement but on arrival found the three female officers busy gossiping yet there were residents outside who waited to be attended to.
He wondered how police officers who ignore serving people and instead just lounge inside the station. To make matters worse, on arrival, the Police chief stood at the station’s doorway for about three minutes before the officers noticed he was in their vicinity.
Nansana female domestic violence victims also claimed before IGP Kayihura that whenever they would report incidents to Ikwenya, Sgt. Andiru and Cpl. Atono, the officers would instead call their husbands and instead solicit for bribes.
The three women were arrested and are currently being held at Uganda Police Force Standards Unit that disciplines errant officers.
Gen. Kayihura had earlier in the week ordered Flying Squad Unit to take over the security of Nansana Municipality after rise in violent crimes. In the three months, six of the 15 women, who were raped before they were killed, met their fate in Nansana Municipality. Teddy Nakalwa was the most recent woman to be killed. She was strangled by attackers in her house in Nansana West Ward on July 17.
