Hajjat Aisha Lubega: So what if gov’t business is our family business?

Nabisunsa Girls School and President Museveni’s pick for Electoral Commission vice chairperson, Hajjat Aisha Lubega has revealed that Parliament has no right to block her appointment again.

Hajjat Lubega was in 2002 dropped by the Parliamentary Committee on Appointments led by former presidential aspirant Aggrey Awori and current deputy speaker Jacob Oulanyah when Museveni nominated her as a commissioner at the EC because her husband Hajji Badru Wagwa Lubega, was chairperson of the Education Service Commission at that time.

Hajjat Lubega is one of Nabisunsa longest serving head teacher’s having taken office during the early 1990s.

Fast forward to 2016, while her husband is still serving in the same capacity and Hajjat Lubega has once again been nominated as  Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama’s number two.

The keen educationist argued that various key interest stakeholders would have very much wanted to be part of the new EC.

Talk has been rife in Parliament corridors that they have nothing against her but like it was the case in 2002, it was improper to have two people from the same family on statutory commissions.

She has since decided to fight and see through her chance to serve the country.

She said: “I do not see any problem being in such a high position like my husband.

“I want to thank the president for nominating me on such a high profile position.

“My promise is that I will do everything as constitutionally provide and my capacity to serve will have no bearing or influence from my husband’s job.

“So what if the President looked around and saw that just like my husband I am also capable to do the EC job?

Hajjat Lubega, a close friend of the first family, rarely makes public appearances but was previously a staple at State House dinners.

One vocal MP on Friday went ahead to say appointments of Muslim women in high public offices has had been revolving around less than 10 families which is unacceptable.

Museveni’s other nominations to head the Electoral Commission (EC) include Court of Appeal Judge Simon Mugenyi Byabakama as chairperson. Others include: Commissioners Peter Emorut, former Kajara MP Steven Tashobya, Prof George Piwang and Mustapha Ssebaggala Kigozi.
