The country’s Judicial Service Commission has requested the Uganda Law Society to submit to the Commission names of suitable persons who qualify to apply for top positions including that of Deputy Chief Justice Steven B Kavuma.
Kavuma’s controversial career on the bench during which he was repeatedly accused of being a tool for the regime in its contest with the political Opposition, often issuing orders which were seen to be pro-ruling party will officially end in September 2017 about four months from now.
In a letter dated 10th April 2017, the ULS President Francis Gimara told potential contenders of the vacant positions that the “submission of your application does not entitle you to an automatic recommendation from Uganda Law Society.”
Former chief justice of the Republic of Seychelles (2009 to 2013) Frederick Egonda–Ntende, Court of Appeal Judge, Geoffrey Kiryabwire and the most favoured candidate, Remmy Kyonooneka Kasule, a senior judge at the Constitutional Court are expected to fight for the job.
Other top positions that are up for grabs include 2 positions for Supreme Court Judges, 4 slots in the Court of Appeal Judges and 16 positions available in the High Court of Uganda.
“If you are in good standing with the ULS and the Law Council, please submit your Curriculum Vitae and qualification documents before close of business 27th April 2017,” ULS boss Gimara added in his memo to Uganda’s top lawyers.
The commission set May 1 as the deadline for submission of relevant academic credentials.
