Ghana’s new President invites Kizza Besigye as Uganda’s ‘leader’

In a rather controversial move, the President-elect of Ghana Nana Akufo-Addo has snubbed President Yoweri Museveni and invited opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye for his swearing-in on Saturday.

Besigye who infamously inaugurated himself as President despite losing the February 2016 elections by a big margin is expected to fly to Accra on Thursday night to join real heads of states who were invited by Akufo-Addo from Togo, Gabon, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Zambia, Benin, Nigeria and Guinea.

This was revealed by Besigye’s party, FDC’s Deputy Secretary General Harold Kaija on Thursday during a political talk show on NBS TV in Kampala.

Mr Kaija claimed that Akufo Addo’s New Patriotic Party which won the election, is one of FDC’s major African allies.

Akufo Addo gained 54% of the vote, while Mr Mahama took 44%. He had been defeated in the two previous elections.

Besigye apologists claim the four-time opponent of President Museveni received the invite as the recognised Head of State of Uganda and will be accorded this status while in Ghana. They also allege that Dr Besigye will be picked at the airport tarmac by the Ghanaian Presidential Security team from where he will be driven to the Flagship House, Ghana’s official Presidential Palace and office, for his three-day visit. Besigye might have won, in the eyes of his supporters, but he has no State.

Outgoing Ghana President John Mahama has been a key ally of President Museveni over the years.

Mahama has delivered his final state of the nation address today.
