Former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye has in his land sensitisation campaign and has advised Ugandans in Mityana town to stand up and defend their land from grabbers.
Speaking at Ssingo Sazza grounds on Sunday, Dr Besigye said; “It is sad that ever month there is a village or two that are displaced by land grabbers. Sharpen your pangas and machetes to be able to fight these big people who we take your land – most of those behind this vice are NRM big shots but don’t let them, fight. If we are not vigilant, much of your land will end up under the control of the privileged few.”
He added, “These people no longer have where to hide the huge sums of money now they have started investing it in land and buying taking villages.
“Land-grabbing is a real present and future menace that we must jointly confront. Many people have lost their land, and because they are ignorant and poor, they lack the capacity and financial resources to challenge the regime and its agents in court.”
Besigye was flanked by Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, Mityana Municiplaity MP Francis Zaake , FDC mobilization secretary Ingrid Turinawe, and FDC spokesperson Harold Kaija. Also present was Mbarara District FDC Chairman Stanley Katembeya, Mayor Mityana Central Ward Fred Wotonava, Mityana District Councillors, Clerics and among other supporters who also spoke to the locals.
Dr Besigye this year initiated a campaign against land grabbing dubbed “my land, my life,” but police have on several occasions blocked his meetings.
