New commander of the UPDF Land Forces Maj Gen Peter Elwelu has scoffed at his critics who are threatening to take him to the international criminal court referring to them as idle minds.
Speaking at his inauguration at the Ministry of Defence headquarters in Mbuya on Thursday afternoon, Elwelu attributed his promotion to his wide range of experience and unequalled service in the force.
“Those saying they want to take me to ICC are mere idle day dreamers. They don’t understand what they were talking about. I have been around in the army working hard for over 30 years,” Elwelu said.
Gen. Elwelu who delivered most of his speech in Runyankore and Kiswahili sang praises for President Museveni and lashed at those who oppose his commands.
“Webare munonga mzee, ninkusiima,” Gen. Elwelu said literary meaning “thank you very much, I highly appreciate.”
He added “I usually wonder why someone goes around demonizing the person that made him who he is for if he had not appointed him to that high position in the army, he would be a mere surgeon in a village hospital,” Gen. Elwelu said with most signals showing that he was referring to opposition leader Col(Rtd) Dr Kizza Besigye.
Gen. Elwelu referred to Museveni as God’s anointed Shepard and thanked him for choosing him among very many brilliant cadres.
He thanked the new Chief of Defence Forces Gen. David Muhoozi for standing with him and rendering him full support during the Rwenzori conflicts and promised never to let him down.
