Uganda’s football governing body, the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has unveiled the country’s new football coach.
Irish Johnathan Mckinstry, 34, was unveiled as new Uganda Cranes head coach on Monday morning at the FUFA head offices during a press conference.
He is the former coach of Bangladesh side, Saif Sporting Club where he has been for one year.
McKinstry was first appointed as Head Coach of Saif Sporting Club on 7 Nov 2018 for the 2018-19 season. Following a successful season, on 1 August 2019 he was reappointed as Head Coach for the 2019-20 season.
On Monday, ahead of the start of the 2019 season, he announced his departure, stating that the time had come for him to explore new opportunities outside of Bangladesh.
Speaking about his appointment, FUFA CEO, Edgar Watson said Johnathan was selected because he fits the association’s vision.
“We selected a coach who fits in our vision of being the no. 1 footballing nation in Africa on and off the pitch,” Watson said.
Previously McKinstry managed the Rwanda national team, the Sierra Leone national team, and Kauno Žalgiris in the A Lyga.
McKinstry replaces Frenchman Sébastien Serge Louis Desabre who left after the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt this year where the Cranes reached the knockout stage.
