At least 16 people have been killed by flooding in Uganda’s hilly district of Rubanda District near Kabale, after heavy monsoon rains hit the sprawling Nfasha Trading Centre, Ikamiro Parish overnight, officials said on Wednesday.
According to District Police Commander, Mr Ramathan Tai, the deaths occurred around 4am on Tuesday bringing down nine houses and carried down the valley two babies, three women and eight men
The deaths were the latest in a disaster that has so far killed more than 50 people across the Uganda.
Rubanda’s deluge came days after the Kisiizi Hospital in Rukungiri District was flooded killing three babies.
The Kigezi region suffer frequent flooding during the August-September rainy season, local leaders say things are have been worse than normal this year.
The Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA) released an alert recently about the second season rainfall being above normal and heavy. It will continue upto December.
“This heavy rain is causing massive floods and landslides in the mountainous areas,” said Martin Owor, Commissioner, Disaster Management in the office of the Prime Minister.
