Property worth millions of shillings went up in smoke when a night fire gutted a dormitory at Nsangi Secondary School, Wakiso District.

the flames completely destroyed students’ personal belongings, including books, clothes and shoes for candidate students in senior four and six.

The blaze was first noticed by some students, who raised the alarm, alerting their colleagues, as they attended the morning assembly.

ACP Hassan Kihanga, the acting commander of Disaster, Fire and Rescue of police, said they were expending  investigations to unearth the circumstances that led to the burning down of the dormitory but student accounts said the fire that started at about 7:30 am stemmed from a flat iron that was left disconnected from a socket by one of the students without switching it off.

“Their effort to salvage their belongings failed as the fire was massive,” he said.

The entire Kizito dorm was burned down and Mr Kihanga said they were investigating the cause of the fire.

He said parents should not panic because their sons were safe and no one was injured.

The school’s board of management is set to meet tomorrow and decide the fate of the affected students.
