Running away after an accident is not really the done thing in the current internet crazy Uganda, as Minister Florence Nakiwala Nakiyingi discovered to her cost.
Tthe Minister of State for Youth and Children Affairs in the Cabinet of Uganda’s driver Rogers Ssemwanga on Monday hit 20-year old Maureen Nalukwago along the Entebbe road leaving her unconscious as the driver took off without stopping to check on the accident victim.
TheUgandan understands that the accident was due to reckless driving as the minister was running late for a meeting with President Museveni at State House Entebbe.
Some onlookers filmed the incident with focus on the number plate for the vehicle and the Minister of State(MS) tag
and posted the videos on Facebook and other social media sites. The videos became viral and Police even used them as a basis for their investigations.
When contacted, the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development where Hon. Nakiwala is based confirmed that the vehicle belonged to the ministry but claimed that they contacted the driver who allegedly had driven straight to a Police station to report himself to police, he was later detained.
Emillian Kayima Kampala Metropolitan Police commander and spokesperson confirmed that their investigations were entirely hinged on the civilian’s viral video and photos.
Kayima however claims they (police) later swung into action and alerted their intelligence operatives who later tracked and arrested the driver.
Godfrey Ninsiima, the District Police Commander for Entebbe disclosed that Ssemwanga will soon be aligned in court and be charged with reckless driving and causing bodily harm.
He adds that the vehicle has since been taken to the ministry of Works and Transport mechanical workshop for inspection.
Surprisingly, by the time of publishing this story, the Minister had not visited the accident victim according to Anthony Bukenya, Nalukwago’s uncle.
