Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party delegates will today vote for a new party president, campaigns are done with voting underway at Mandela National stadium in Namboole.
The party top echelon has been divided between the top two candidates too, with the former party presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye, party secretary general Nandala Mafabi and Joyce Ssebugwawo supporting Amuriat while others such as Ssemujju, Amanya Mushega, Alaso, Maj. John Kazoora and Wandera Ogalo back Muntu.
According to the agenda, voting which started 12:30pm ends at 1:30 pm and tallying and announcements will be between 2:30pm-3:30pm.
Members of the National Delegates’ Conference (NDC) will also be electing the Deputy Treasury General and the Secretary for Labor who were not elected during the general elections on 13th June 2015.
FDC since the early retirement of Dr. Besigye in November 2012 has always conducted presidential elections separate from the general poll where the Secretary General and all other positions are filled.
Gen. Muntu
Maj Gen Mugisha Muntu has asked FDC delegates to re-elect him such that he entrenches democracy in the party and continues with his fight against the vice of individualism that has crept into the party.
“This [electing leaders] process is the most critical. I hear people who say Muntu has killed the party. Why do you think there are these journalists here? Because we have positioned ourselves as a party that is doing things which have failed in other parties,” he said.
Muntu, a former army commander, has been party president since 2012 when he defeated Nandala Mafabi during an election that left the party deeply divided.
He has been accused of being very soft and less assertive compared his predecessor, Dr Kizza Besigye.
Matsiko
Daniel Matsiko has vowed to hold talks with Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to return Sam Mugumya, who is under incarceration in the Western part of the country.
He also promised to promote cohesion and unity in Kampala City.
Amuriat
Patrick Amuriat has said his presidency will concentrate on building structures that will further the defiance campaign.
He said: “Some people think that we must massage the dictator. the dictator needs to be pushed. I want you to prepare for this struggles.”
He said he will identify political candidates for the various places early enough from the grassroots. Amuriat said he will promote youth and women leadership. Ssebugwawo, the party deputy president who said he was a vastly experienced politician.
