The FDC party has given police and the state 24 hours to produce in court or release party members who were detained in relations to the Rukungiri violence last week.

Just after 3:00 pm on Monday, party president Mugisha Muntu arrived at Nagalama police station to check on three opposition leaders who are being detained.

The violence that was ignited after police clashed with FDC supporters left a one Edison Nasasira dead.

Several FDC members were detained after the clashes.

Addressing a news conference at the FDC party headquarters in Najjanankumbi, party deputy spokesperson Paul Mwiru said that the continued detention of their members including former presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye, the party secretary for mobilization Ingrid Turinawe and the party presidential candidate Patrick Amuriat Oboi at Nagalama police station is not only in violation of their rights but also criminal and unlawful.

According to Mwiru, they have not been informed about the nature of offences they committed which makes them political prisoners.

He revealed that once their demand for releasing their members is not adhered to they will be left with no option but to petition the high court for their immediate release since they have already exceeded 48 hours in custody.

Others that were arrested in relations to Rukungiri incident included Besigye’s driver Fred Kato, Ronald Muhinda, Atuheire Brian and Baker Matsiiko.
