Two weeks after the shooting of Kenneth Akena, a child protection specialist based in Kasese District, details about how the alleged killer Mathew Kanyamunyu telephoned a top Police officer for advice have surface.
A detective on the investigating team on Friday disclosed that Kanyamunyu, 39, before calling his co-accused and sibling Joseph telephoned the top Police officer before rushing the victim to hospital, evidence that was retrieved from telephone printouts of Mathew (Kanyamunyu). Police chief Kale Kayihura attended the burial of Akena in Kitgum District.
Akena was shot in the stomach and later succumbed to the bullet wounds at Novik hospital after being moved around four other medical facilities.
Even after talking to the senior cop, Mathew Kanyamunyu did not notify Jinja Road Police, which is located along the route to the hospital.
Thought still cagey about revealing the identity of their boss for fear, investigating officers are questioning the conduct of the said Police officer as to why he did not immediately report the matter at their Kampala East Regional Police offices (Jinja rd Police) in Nakawa.
Now, it has emerged that could he have been advised on how to handle the dreadful situation by the prominent Police officer who commands an elite unit in the national force.
Investigators also found communications between Kanyamunyu and a prominent city businessman who speculators say was controversial journalist Mr Andrew Mwenda. A close friend of the Kanyamunyu family, has told Daily Monitor on last Sunday that Mr Kanyamunyu called him moments after the shooting incident happened.
“Yes, Matthew called me,” Mr Mwenda said. “I am his brother to all intents and purposes and he will always call me when he is in trouble.”
It is still unknown if the senior cop and others have yet recorded a statement to ascertain Mathew Kanyamunyu’s communication to officer after the shooting.
IGP Kayihura: Alleged killer Kanyamunyu is not connected
Relatives of Akena on Wednesday handed over a recorded video clip of his dying declaration to police investigators.
Police thereafter warned them against talking to the press about developments in the case.
“Cops told us that if we continue giving details to the media and other people, it may compromise their investigations,” a relative, who preferred anonymity said when contacted for a comment.

On Tuesday, Kanyamunyu, Munwangari and his brother Joseph were read the murder charges before they were remanded to Luzira prisons. Moses Kanyamunyu was released in a police bond as investigations whether he is linked to the murder continue.
Detectives are still carrying out investigations with the hope of recovering the gun that was used in the shooting, which is still missing.
