The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Bill will address the issue of inefficient utilisation of energy in Uganda, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, Ms Irene Bateebe has said.

The remarks are contained in her speech delivered on Tuesday at the Energy Efficiency and Electric Mobility Conference at Speke Resort Munyonyo.

“The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs and consultation with other sector stakeholders drafted the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Bill. This is to be presented again to Cabinet along with the Energy Policy of Uganda,” Ms Irene said.

She added, “The Bill will address the issue of inefficient utilisation of energy in Uganda which has led to; Rising Cost of Energy, Energy waste and environmental degradation and continued use of inefficient appliances on the market.”

The Energy Efficiency initiatives implemented by Government include; Energy Efficient lighting, Efficient cook stoves, Energy Efficient Motors, Minimum Energy Performance Standards, Energy Efficiency in Transport among others.

This Energy Efficiency and Electric Mobility Conference seeks to address the issues of industrial energy efficiency in line with SDG 7 which calls for us “to double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency by 2030.”

It is an awareness centered week aimed at encouraging the sustainable utilization of energy and minerals in Uganda and it has been held annually for the past 17 years (since 2005).

Ms Bateebe also revealed that the Ministry is taking a lead role in the promotion of electric mobility through ensuring provision of sustainable and reliable electricity. This will be further achieved with a project on electric vehicle charging infrastructure eco system.

President Yoweri Museveni recently met the e-mobility key stakeholders in September 2022 and highlighted the role of energy in this nascent area.
