Top seed Shamim Bangi underlined her superiority on the women’s domestic badminton scene by claiming women’s singles and doubles titles at the East Africa Badminton Challenge at the Lugogo MTN Arena late on Sunday evening.
Her efficiency though was still not enough to prevent the tournament being postponed with the men’s singles and doubles as well as mixed doubles categories pushed to Saturday evening because of time.
“We were a bit overwhelmed by the numbers,” admitted Uganda Badminton Association CEO Simon Mugabi before confirming the rescheduled games.
The three-day City Tyres sponsored event that featured no less than 10 categories saw Bangi claim a 21-8, 21-8 straight sets win over Juma Sharon to win the singles title.
She later teamed up with Aisha Nakiyemba to defeat Jovia Komuhendo and Brenda Nabusindo 21-7 and 21-5 in the doubles before play was stopped towards midnight.
She will on Saturday seek a hattrick of titles after qualifying for the semifinals of the mixed doubles event alongside Fred Kirabo, the pair having defeated Ronald Lule and Betty Apio 21-8 and 21-5 in the quarterfinals.
Brian Kasirye also maintained his recent good form comfortably dispatching Davis Senono 21-15 and 21-12 to win the Boys Under-19 title.
