Dig in and plant a tree as NEMA, Little Hands Go Green kickoff World Environment Day activities

Marking the upcoming World Environment Day on June 5, Uganda’s Little Hands Go Green, an organization started by media man Joseph Masembe that emphasizes green education in children in order to create positive change for the future has flagged off the World Environment Day Celebration Caravan.

The was today, June 1st, 2017 at the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) headquarters in Kampala in the company of the State Minister for Environment, Hon Kitutu Kimono, the Executive Director for NEMA, Dr. Tom Okuru and Ibanda District’s Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Jovrine Kaliisa Kyomukama.

The world environment day has been a flagship avenue for raising awareness on emerging environmental issues from marine pollution and global warming, to sustainable consumption and wildlife crime.

Involving schoolchildren fully in the project, Little Hands Go Green founder and CEO, Mr.  Masembe told TheUgandan that the team that after the Kampala ceremony set off for Western Uganda and will as part of the celebrations be planting trees along the route to Ibanda District – part of the drive to bring to life this year’s World Environment Day theme of ‘CONNECT WITH NATURE – in the city and on the land, from the poles to the equator’.

Mpigi UMEA Primary School, St. Kizito Mpigi Primary School are some of the schools that have joined this noble cause so far areas of  Nkozi town, Mpigi and Buwama districts in central Uganda.

The caravan will then snake through Masaka, Lwengo, Lyatonde and Mbarara districts with similar activities before reaching Ibanda, where NEMA decided was the venue for this year’s National Environment Day Celebrations slated for June 5th. President Yoweri Museveni is the chief guest.

On the eve of the celebrations, an environmental run will take place at Kibubura Integrated Playgrounds in Ibanda District.
