dfcu donates cement to renovate Pece stadium

The dilapidated Pece War Memorial Stadium will finally get a much needed makeover ahead of the Federation of East African Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) Games slated for August this year with dfcu Bank has today handed over 1,000 bags of cement valued at over UGX 30 million.

Despite Acholi youths being known for their sportsmanship and artistry, their abode Pece Stadium had over the years became the dual symbol of decay for this town and its society.

Pece was built in 1959 in memory of World war II veterans from Acholi Sub region was selected as one of the venues that will host athletic competitions.

But its poor state with broken perimeter walls, nonfunctional wash rooms, poor terrain among others could hinder hosting the competitions that are expected to attract thousands of spectators within and outside the country.

To this end, dfcu Bank’s handover, which was made to representatives of Gulu District has come at an opportune time.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, the dfcu Bank Northern Regional Manager Christopher Kinyera said the contribution to the renovation of the stadium was a display of the Bank’s commitment to the development of the communities in which it operates.

“We are aware that the people of Gulu are passionate about sports- partnered with their great hospitality, we are confident that this is the perfect venue for an activity of this magnitude,” Mr. Kinyera said.

Over 1,000 schools are expected to take part in the 16th edition of the East African Secondary School Games and will be hosted by St Joseph College, Layibi and Sacred Heart Girls School.The students are expected to take part in a variety of indoor and outdoor games including football, rugby, netball, basketball, volleyball, handball, hockey, chess, swimming and badminton.
