Uganda Cranes’ first choice goalkeeper Denis Onyango says he is retiring from the national team after 12 years and a record 58 matches.

 The 31-year old on Wednesday watched from the bench as Uganda bowed from the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations I after a 1-1 draw with Mali in the eastern Gabon town of Oyem.

Onyango made his first international debut for the Uganda Cranes national team in 2005 when Uganda Cranes was playing in World Cup Qualifiers on Saturday 18. June 2005 Uganda Cranes versing Cape Verde. From then Onyango has been a regular player in Uganda Cranes matches.

the Caf Player of the Year – Based in Africa said that playing on the national squad was now beyond him due to personal reasons.

He said that “I am thinking about retiring from international football. It is down to personal reasons that I want to retire from international football. I will make up my mind soon whether I should continue or not.”

With the Cranes, Onyango has been brilliant between the goalposts conceding only twice in the Afcon 2017 qualifiers and helping Uganda maintain their impressive record in the Fifa 2018 World Cup qualifiers as the only side yet to concede a goal.

A number of Uganda Cranes’ senior players are expected to announce their departure when the team returns to Kampala on Friday.
