FT: Burkina Faso 1-1 Cameroon

Skipper Benjamin Moukandjo’s superbly curled a free-kick into the left corner was cancelled out by a close range Issoufou Dayo’s header as in Libreville’s Stade de l’Amitie to register the second stalemate on the opening day of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Group A match had plenty of action, with one of the clearest falling to Clinton N’Jie, on loan at Marseille from Tottenham shooting wide from six yards.

Cameroon arrived at the tournament without eight players who rejected the call-up. One of those absent is Liverpool defender Joel Matip and it looks like he will be sorely missed. A lack of organisation, discipline and decisiveness in defence cost the Indomitable Lions an opening-match victory. They might have got away with it had they taken their opportunities in front of goal. So there is work to do at both ends of the pitch.

All the four teams in the group; Gabon, Guinea Bissau, Cameroon and Burkina Faso are now levelled at one point after matchday one.

The Uganda Cranes who qualified after 39-years for the Afcon will be based in Port Gentil where they are grouped alongside Ghana, Mali and Egypt.

They arrived today in West Africa.
