Death toll in Kiryandongo bus accident increases

The Medical Superintendent of Kiryandongo hospital Dr Godfrey Kisembo has said they have 23 bodies in their mortuary after being killed and several others injured on Friday night when a bus rammed into a tractor and a beer truck in the midwestern Ugandan district of Kiryandongo.

The dead include three children and 19 adults, police said in a statement.

The 9-year old Nathan Mudangwa who was among those who were admitted at Kiryandongo hospital died on Saturday morning, the hospital administrators said.

Out of the 23 bodies, the hospital has identified seven bodies which have been claimed by their relatives.

They include Salome Atuhairwe, 43, a resident of Kampala, Hamad Bogere,44, a resident of Luwero district, Hassan Oringiya, 42, a resident of Kisoro district, one Allan Mboinera, Charles Obedi,32 from Opok, Saidi Kyambi, 40, a resident of Iganga district and Norman Mulangwa,7 a resident of Kampala.

“Evacuation teams are working tirelessly to rescue the injured and Kiryandongo Hospital is handling. Reinforcement is being organized to support the rescue services,” said the statement issued by Emilian Kayima, police spokesperson.

The bus was heading towards the capital Kampala from the northern Ugandan district of Lira.

Uganda registers at least 20,000 accidents with over 2,000 deaths each year, making it one of the countries with the highest road accident fatality rates in the world, according to police figures.
