Police in Nebbi district have arrested and detained a tribal chief of Kal-wang chiefdom for raping 20 year old disabled woman.
The traditional leader found the disabled woman at home and alone before forcing himself on the helpless woman.
The 69 year old clan leader is a resident of Kal-wang parish, Odhure village Nebbi Sub County and the victim is his granddaughter.
According to the father of the victim Mr Joseph Opar Okwong, the clan leader took advantage of his daughter because she is disabled and was alone at home and defenseless. Other family members had gone to the field to till the land when the act happened.
The victim is limbless and cannot talk.
The Nebbi Officer in Charge of Criminal Investigations Mr Hamilton Okidi said the Suspect will be charged with rape and warned local councils against settling such cases of criminal nature in homes.
Okidi said the case was the first of its kind in the district and said the suspect will face the law.
The suspect was arrested after young boys who were hunting for birds near the home of the victim saw him and alerted the rest of village members to come for the rescue of the woman.
The Prime Minister of Alur kingdom Mr Vincent Ocaya condemned the act and said the culprit must face a severe punishment while the Chairperson Nebbi Association of women with disabilities Ms Doreen Clare Nimungu said the culprit must be sentence to life imprisonment for violating sexual right of people with disabilities.
