There was free drama at Hotel African as two female ministers fought over a microphone.
While lands mister Persis Namuganza insisted that her colleague was delaying the meeting, ICT minister Aidah Nantaba insisted that she was “tackling national issues”
Ms Nantaba accused Ms Namuganza of behaving like an LC1 chairman of a village rather than a minister after Namuganza told her to wind up her speech.
The meeting had been called by Lands Ministry and the Cabinet Minister Betty Amongi was in attendance. The main agenda was to forge a way forward on the rampant evictions in Buganda.
Ms Nantaba had gone half way her speech but Ms Namuganza seemed irked by some of the things her colleague was pointing out.
Trouble started when Nantaba said that while at the lands ministry, the flamboyant minister survived lynching by land grabbers including death threats from a UPDF general she did not name.
Ms Namuganza who was chairing the meeting stood up and told Ms Nantaba to stop speaking since “there is no time to waste on a full-day meeting”
Nantaba was disgusted and asked for respect from Namuganza who she accused of behaving in a childish way.
“If a minister can’t control the way she speaks then what should expect from an ordinary person,” said Nantaba before she accused Namuganza of being a pathetic moderator.
Nantaba continued talking about other land grabbers, saying that MPs and ministers also grab poor people’s land with the help of officials in the lands ministry.
She however seemed to have rubbed Namuganza the wrong before a determined Namuganza stormed out of her chair at the high table and told Nantaba to put down the microphone.
Ms Nantaba who seemed to have been happy with annoying Namuganza then gave up the microphone as legislators from Buganda cheered the youthful minister.
The MPs who attended the meeting then walked out of the Katonga hall meeting accusing Namuganza of failing to moderate the meeting.
Ms Amongi then intervened and apologized for what had happened before calm could return to the highly charged meeting.
