Students at Makerere University were on Friday afternoon involved in a cat and mouse chase after they attempted to enter and attend a crisis meeting at Uganda’s oldest institution.
The students who were mobilized by Mr William Karamagi, the guild academic affairs minister are part of the over 400 whose names are missing on the graduation list. Makerere is set to hold its 67th graduation ceremony on February 21.
The students were however blocked by police officers although TheUgandan understands that some students briefly attended the council meeting before they were ejected.
According to sources at the university, the affected students and their leaders had learnt that their main concern, which is missing on the graduation list, was not on the agenda.
There was even more anger as some students were told that top university officials including the university vice chancellor, Prof John Ddumba Ssentamu, had met selected students and promised to add them on the list.
On receiving the information, the students resolved to storm the meeting to demand for answers from the council members.
However, some of the leaders of the students were arrested and taken to Wandegeya police station.
