Busoga University was on Tuesday morning rocked by chaos and counter engagements between students and the police following the closure of the university on allegations of awarding fake degrees.
Speaking to our reporter, Nasibu Nditta the Iganga District Police Commander said that the students were blocked from holding demonstrations because they did not apply for police protection, neither did they seek for permission from police as per the requirements of the Public Order Management Act.
“We did not want mayhem in the University because the students never informed us in writing about their intended demonstration. We are very security conscious about the non university students who may want to take advantage and disorganize the peace in the area.” Nditta said.
According to the National Council for higher Education (NCHE), the university was closed in December last year following degrees that were awarded to over 1,000 students which were allegedly fake with the majority of the affected students from South Sudan and Nigeria.
The would be chaotic demonstration was later suspended following a closed door meeting between Nditta and student leaders at Iganga Resource Centre.
